Common Names: Barrel Cactus
Description: Echinocactus sp. or Ferocactus sp. (Barrel Cactus) are a members of the Cactaceae (Cactus) family. The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, Vol. 3 recorded 2 species of Ferocactus. Ferocactus nobilis (then called Cactus nobilis) was listed as native of Mexico and first cultivated in Britain in 1796. Ferocactus cylindraceus and Echinocactus spp. are native to the Sonoran desert areas of Mexico and the U.S. southwest.
