Common Names: Lily, True Lily

Description: Lilium sp. (Lily) is a member of the Lily family (Liliaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 2 recorded thirteen species of lilies from North America, Kamtschatka, Germany and Hungary, the Levant, Siberia and the Pyrenees, China, Carolina, Italy, and Austria. Several of the thirteen species were cultivated in Britain as early as 1596.  The lily examples illustrated or cited on this page are too non-specifically drawn to be assigned to any particular species, though some resemble Lilum maculatum.
