Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum (Lady Slipper Orchid), published as Cypripedium hirsutissimum (Villous Lady's Slipper), Curtis's Botanical Magazine, vol. 83, plate 4990, 1857
Common Names: Lady Slipper Orchid, Lady's Slipper Orchid, Slipper Orchid

Description: Paphiopedilum sp. and Cypripedium sp. (Lady Slipper Orchid) are members of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2, vol. 5, lists no species of Paphiopedilum but does record six species of  Cypripedium on p. 220-222.  Cypripedium is known to grow in North America, Europe, and Asia.  Paphiopedilum is known from tropical forested habitats in southeast Asia and is widely grown by orchid enthusiasts.  The designer who produced the pattern for the textile illlustrated above took a great deal of artistic license in the design making it very difficult to accurately identify even the genus of this flower, though it does bear some resemblance to the Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum botanical illustration and the photograph.  The ruffled objects on either side of the topmost petal of the flower as well as the berry-like objects in the center of the flower in the textile design seem to have come from the designer's imagination.
